Job Description

Under the general direction and supervision of the Administrative Director of Admissions, the Admissions Counselor is responsible for providing educational and vocational advising services to current and prospective students for the College at assigned locations.

The Admissions Counselor collects and analyzes information about individuals through records, tests, interviews, and other professional sources in order to appraise interests, abilities, and personality characteristics to aid students in making and carrying out vocational and educational objectives. The Admissions Counselor provides prospective students with necessary information to make informed choices about careers and College programs of study, to guide students toward choosing Southeast Community College, to provide information and assistance as needed in other areas of Enrollment and Student Affairs, and to present a positive public image of the College. This is a full-time position.

Essential Functions

Assist Individuals with Career Development Activities:

  • Assist current and prospective students in developing educational goals leading to career and employment choices based on individual abilities, interests, and personality characteristics.
  • Administer, score, and interpret career guidance and other assessment instruments; provides occupational and educational information to enable individuals to formulate career decisions.

Collaborate with Campus Assessment and Testing Services:

  • Collaborate with Assessment and Testing Services to provide advising services to current and prospective students who have completed college placement testing.
  • Assist in off-site test administration and test score interpretation with prospective students.
  • Assist in the interpretation and implications of test scores as they relate to the admissions and registration process.
  • Follow up on student referrals from the Assessment and Testing Center to interpret placement scores and advise students on course placement, career development, program admission, developmental coursework, and appropriate testing resources.

Provide Pre-Admission Advising and Advising for Visiting Students:

  • Provide presentations, workshops, and individual and group meetings to prospective and visiting students regarding educational opportunities at Southeast Community College.
  • Administer, score, and interpret basic academic skill assessment instruments and assist visiting students in identifying effective remediation techniques.
  • Assist with general registration activities. Routinely assist visiting students with course registration and advising.
  • Provide applicants for admission with information regarding College admissions and specific program requirements, deadlines, and information.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for students regarding the admissions process and transitioning to college.

Assist Individuals with Academic Concerns:

  • Respond to staff and student referrals relating to academic issues.
  • Help students with college adjustment concerns and refer individuals to appropriate resources on campus, community agencies, institutions, or specialists as necessary to secure appropriate ancillary or long-term services.
  • Collaborate with Enrollment and Student Affairs staff to reinstate dismissed visiting students and support at-risk student populations.

Conduct Campus Tours and Informational Sessions:

  • Conduct individual and group campus tours.
  • Provide individual and group career counseling/informational sessions.
  • Participate in on-campus recruiting events and new student onboarding programming.

Functions as A Member of the Admissions & Testing Team:

  • Interact with colleagues, students, and staff in a manner that promotes a positive image of the Admissions and Testing teams and the College.
  • Support the College-wide effort to promote/facilitate institutional services such as recruitment, enrollment, placement, and orientation.

Record Maintenance and Data Management:

  • Utilize and maintain records associated with student admissions and advising.
  • Enter, analyze, interpret, and discern admissions data and trends, identify barriers to enrollment, and work as part of the Admissions team to develop strategies to effectively communicate with and recruit prospective students.
  • Utilize technology-based platforms to monitor, support, and communicate with students during the admissions and advising process.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in counseling, human relations, psychology, or other related field.
  2. Two (2) years* of professional work experience at a secondary and/or post-secondary institution in one or more areas of College Student Affairs. College Student Affairs is defined as: Admission, Recruitment, Testing, Financial Aid, Counseling, Placement, Assessment, Career and/or Academic Advising, Retention, or Registration.

*A Master’s degree may be substituted for one (1) year of the required two (2) years of work experience.
