Job Description

Position: Bartender

FTE: 0.5 (20 hours/week)

Reports To: Beverage Director 

Location: Minneapolis, MN

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Position Summary

The Bartender is responsible for providing warm, knowledgeable, and efficient service that aligns with Owamni’s mission of revitalizing Indigenous foodways. Guiding guests through the menu with confidence and cultural respect, ensuring an experience that reflects the values of hospitality, education, and Indigenous excellence. This role blends bartending with storytelling, cultural respect, and teamwork.

This position requires deep product knowledge, cultural humility, and the ability to create a welcoming environment for all guests, while working collaboratively with the service and culinary teams. Key ResponsibilitiesGuest Service
  • Greet and engage guests warmly, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Guide guests through the menu, providing detailed knowledge about ingredients, preparation, and cultural significance.
  • Take orders accurately and ensure timely delivery of food and beverages.
  • Respond to guest needs promptly, professionally, and with hospitality.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Support the team during setup, service, and breakdown, including batching, prep, and restocking.
  • Coordinate effectively with kitchen, bar, support and host teams to ensure smooth service flow.
  • Communicate clearly about guest allergies, dietary needs, and special requests.
  • Participate in pre-shift meetings and maintain open communication throughout shifts.
Cultural Integrity & Product Knowledge
  • Maintain deep knowledge of Owamni’s menu and Indigenous ingredients.
  • Share the cultural significance of dishes and beverages when appropriate.
  • Uphold the values of food sovereignty, cultural education, and responsible sourcing.
Operational Standards
  • Follow all opening, running, and closing procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and health code standards in all service areas.
  • Accurately ring transactions, process payments and follow cash handling procedures.
  • Adheres to workplace safety policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with company, local, state and federal regulations.
  • Must be alcohol trained and follow guidelines to remain compliant with local, state, and federal alcohol service laws, including checking IDs, refusing service when appropriate, and adhering to safe serving guidelines.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Prior experience in a server or front-of-house hospitality role.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and stay organized in a fast-paced environment.
  • Team-oriented, dependable, and comfortable in a fast-paced environment.
  • Cultural awareness and respect for Indigenous values and communities.
  • Reliable and punctual attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in Indigenous or mission-driven hospitality settings.
  • Must be 21+ and able to obtain required permits (alcohol service/food handler).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to stay calm, focused, and kind during busy services.
  • Bilingual or multilingual, especially in Spanish or an Indigenous language.
  • Demonstrated interest in Indigenous foodways or cultural education.
  • Agave spirits knowledge
  • Classic cocktail and craft cocktail experience
Working Conditions
  • On-site position; must be available for evening and weekend shifts.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Work is fast-paced and guest-facing.
